Clinton Wayne - Prosthetic Makeup Effects Artist for Film & TV, Portland, Oregon

Clinton Wayne is an Emmy-winning film and television makeup artist and prosthetic makeup effects designer based in Portland, Oregon. Over his 31-year career, he has been a six-time Emmy nominee and two-time Emmy winner, for The X-Files (2001) and Six Feet Under (2006), with four additional nominations for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. He is a member of the Local 706 Makeup Artist Union. His work can be seen in the Academy Award makeup-nominated film "Click," where he applied prosthetics to lead actress Kate Beckinsale for Rick Baker's Cinovation Studios. Clinton is a sought-after makeup artist known for his skill, strong work ethic and professionalism.

Early Years

Clinton was born and raised in Flagstaff, Arizona, and spent part of his childhood on the House Rock Buffalo Ranch in northern Arizona. Helping his family run the ranch taught him responsibility and hard work early on, lessons he still credits for his success and his ability to solve problems creatively.

Art fascinated Clinton from a young age. He loved to draw, paint and sculpt, often depicting the wildlife on the ranch and the characters he saw in movies. Then his 7th grade art teacher, Mr. Nelson, showed the class a behind-the-scenes feature on the original Star Wars, and Clinton discovered that making creatures and monsters for films could be a career. From that point on, his artwork shifted from wildlife to movie monsters and aliens, and he used every art class to sharpen the sculpting, drawing and painting skills he would later rely on as a special makeup effects artist.

After high school, Clinton spent two years working several jobs at once, cleaning hotel rooms by day and unloading trucks overnight, to save for the highly regarded Joe Blasco Makeup Training Center. In January 1995 he moved to Orlando, Florida, to attend, and he considers that education invaluable in launching his career.

Starting Out

After graduating, Clinton returned to Arizona and quickly found work on commercials and small films in Phoenix and Sedona. Later that year he was hired on the ABC miniseries "Dead Man's Walk," a prequel to "Lonesome Dove," where makeup artists David Atherton, Cheryl Nick and Doug Cress taught him about working on location and the demands of the film industry.

In spring 1996, Clinton moved to Burbank, California. He soon worked on the TNT movie "The Rough Riders" in Texas, followed by a number of films around Los Angeles. In 1997, David Atherton hired him for the TNT western "Buffalo Soldiers," where he earned the hours to join I.A.T.S.E. Local 706. That same year he married his childhood sweetheart, Amy Neville, who joined him in California as a first grade teacher in Burbank.

W.M. Creations and Hollywood

In the summer of 1997, Clinton interviewed with Matthew Mungle and John Jackson at their special makeup effects lab, W.M. Creations, Inc. in North Hollywood, and was offered a job the next day. Over eight years he sculpted, painted, made molds, ran gelatin and foam latex, and learned every side of special makeup effects, both in the lab and on set. As a Local 706 member, he could start a project in the lab and then apply the finished prosthetic on set himself, on shows like "The X-Files," "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Soul Survivors."

Clinton later shifted his focus to on-set application, keeping his beauty skills sharp on "Freaky Friday" and "Raising Helen" and his prosthetic skills on "Click" and "Knocked Up," while working alongside makeup artists such as Rick Baker and Christina Smith. In 2003 he took over "CSI: Miami" from Matthew Mungle and single-handedly created all the special makeup effects for Seasons 2 and 3, before rejoining Matthew on the original "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation." Other highlights include "X-Men: The Last Stand," aging Julia Roberts in "Fireflies in the Garden," "The Midnight Meat Train," "Salem," "New Girl," "Sabotage" and "Lee Daniels' The Butler."

Eventually Clinton returned to W.M. Creations as Matthew's business partner, overseeing the lab's projects for four years while continuing to work on set as a special makeup effects artist.

Portland and the Pacific Northwest

In the summer of 2015, Clinton and his family moved to the Portland, Oregon area, drawn by its outdoors, its thriving artistic community and its growing film and television industry. Since then, Clinton has brought his Hollywood experience to productions throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond. His recent work includes two seasons of NBC's "Grimm" and Netflix's "I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore," both filmed in Portland, as well as "Army of the Dead" in New Mexico and New Jersey and Marvel's "Avengers: Endgame" in Atlanta. Most recently, he worked on "Salem's Lot," filmed outside Boston. Through Wayne Studios, LLC, he continues to design and apply prosthetic makeup and special makeup effects for film, television and commercials across Portland, Los Angeles and around the world!

When he's not on set, you'll find Clinton hiking the Columbia River Gorge and Mount Hood with his family.
